After the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) backed his candidature for the presidential contest as the opposition candidate, former Union minister Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said he will be in Telangana on July 18 as part of his campaign. Sinha will meet Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). This visit has gained importance in the context of KCR trying to gain a foothold in national politics.
Although the TRS has always been an 'equal distance' between the BJP and the Congress, the party has on many occasions sided with the Modi government. Supported the NDA in the 2017 presidential election.
Ahead of the 2023 assembly elections, the TRS is seen as its main rival as the BJP expands its footprint in the state.
This justifies the party's support for Sinha. Party sources told this newspaper that Sinha's visit to the state could be seen as a sign of a rift between the TRS and other opposition parties.
Speaking to this newspaper on condition of anonymity, an opposition leader said the TRS had no choice but to support the opposition candidate as the BJP reached its doorstep.
