Britain's Queen Elizabeth II overthrew the King of Thailand on Sunday, becoming the second longest reigning monarch in history after Louis XIV of France.

The UK is celebrating the 96th Queen's Platinum Jubilee to commemorate 70 years of service to the country with great events last weekend.

Now she has set another record by surpassing King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand who ruled for 70 years 126 days between 1927 and 2016. Louis XIV of France was the longest reigning emperor from 1643 to 1715 with a reign of 72 years and 110 days.

She was crowned Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and became the longest-serving British monarch, surpassing her grandfather, Queen Victoria, in September 2015.

After four days of royal parades, street parties, demonstrations and other events in the UK and Commonwealth to mark the Platinum Jubilee milestone, the Emperor wrote a letter thanking the nation, saying she was "humbled and deeply impressed" and "will feel this renewed sense of unity for many years to come.”.

"When it comes to how to mark 70 years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first," the letter read.

"I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee," she said.
