Porters stage a protest against police harassment

The porters under the leadership of Mutha Workers Union and CITU staged a protest at Dharna Chowk on Tuesday, strongly protesting against the harassment by the police and the transport department.

CITU leaders CH Narsingrao, CH Baburao, Donepudi Kashinath, K Umamaheswara Rao, NCH Srinivas, Sitaramulu, B Noi Satyababu, Ivi Narayana, Brahmaiah and others addressed the protesters.

They expressed their concern over imposing penalties and fines on gang workers for not helping during such trying times. He expressed concern that gang workers are not getting work due to slow down of businesses.

CITU leaders have warned that if the police and transport department do not stop harassing porters, they will escalate the agitation and lay siege to government offices.

They lamented that the government has not made any laws for the welfare of porters and they are not getting benefits like ESI, PF etc. It is alleged that the police and transport department officials are imposing fines ranging from Rs.1000 to Rs.25000 thousand on the transport vehicles of porters.

High diesel price and high insurance premiums are eroding their meager income. Penalties have increased after the Center amended the Motor Vehicle Act. Mutha workers union traffic ACP Srinivas and RDO Sivaprasad Rao submitted petitions and resolved their issues.
