Partial response to Bharat Bandh in Vijayawada

By Our Special Correspondent

Vijayawada on Monday saw a poor response to the Bharat Bandh issued by some organizations in protest of the implementation of the Agneepath scheme. Normal life continued in the city and no exhibitions or other activities were organized.

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Sunday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. Trade activities continued and all offices, banks and commercial establishments in the city were opened. APSRTC ran its services as usual.

As a precautionary measure some trains were canceled by railways before any untoward incidents took place. Hundreds of police were deployed to set up barricades on some of the main roads leading to the railway station and to prevent any untoward incidents at important junctions in the city.

Security was beefed up at Vijayawada railway station and Pandit Nehru bus station during the Bharat Bandh on Monday. Hundreds of police have been deployed in the vicinity of the railway station and bus station since morning.

Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanti Rana visited the Tata Railway Station and reviewed the security arrangements. Violent protests have erupted in many parts of India since June 17, with angry youths vandalizing the properties of railways and some central government agencies. Since then security has been tightened at all important railway stations in the state and police are on high alert.
