Indians love mango and it is an integral part of their culture and history and that is why it is called the king of fruits. Although the delightful fruit is only available for a few months – from April to August, no other fruit can match its popularity.
Today, India is the largest producer of mangoes in the world and supplies more than 50% of this tropical fruit globally.
Every year, National Mango Day is celebrated on 22nd July. From ancient Indian literature to artifacts found in excavations from the Harappan civilization in the Indus Valley, there are clear references to this sweet fruit.
The most popular mango varieties in India are Himsagar, Kesar, Chausa, Neelam, Alphonso and Dasheri. Apart from being juicy and delicious, this fruit also contains vitamin C and D. Therefore, many people consume mangoes for health reasons.
According to historians, mangoes were first cultivated in India 5,000 years ago. Mangoes are cultivated from Asia to the Middle East and parts of South America and East Africa.
