The government on Tuesday announced the recruitment of personnel on a short-term contract basis under the scheme, unveiling the "Fire Defense Policy Reform" for the recruitment of soldiers, sailors and airmen in the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
The government said the scheme would come into effect immediately and would create a more youthful and technically skilled combat force in the armed forces "by ensuring a perfect balance between youth and experienced personnel."
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, General Manoj Pandey, Admiral R Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary briefed the media after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the proposal. The Agneepath scheme - which was earlier proposed as the Tour of Duty - is expected to reduce permanent power levels in over 13 lakh strong armed forces.
Under the scheme, most soldiers will retire from service in just four years. Of the 45,000 to 50,000 recruits annually, only 25 percent are allowed to continue under the permanent commission for another 15 years. It will significantly reduce the defense pension bill, which has been a major concern of governments for many years.
Recruitment will start in 90 days, bringing "All India, All Class" recruitment to the service. The regiment system is very important for the army which has territory and caste bases and over time anyone from any caste, region, class or religious background will be allowed to join the existing regiments.
