RUBIK’S Cube is probably the world’s best-loved 3-D puzzle. Its popularity has not ebbed even 37 years after it was created. Hungarian professor of architecture Erno Rubik was trying to solve a structural mechanism problem and ended up creating a puzzle that has fascinated puzzlers across the world. With more than 350 million cubes sold, the 3 x 3 x 3 cube remains the world’s top-selling puzzle game.
The cube has six different colours divided among 54 squares. Each of the six faces of the cube contains nine colored squares. To solve the puzzle, the sides of the cube have to be rotated in such a way that each face contains only one colour.
Puzzlers strive to solve the cube in the shortest possible time. Competitions include categories which involve solving the cube with one hand, using the feet or even blindfolded! Currently, Australian Felix Zemdegs holds the world speed solving record of 6.65 seconds.
On February 6, 5011, nine-year-old Dhanayush Raniga became the youngest child to solve the cube blindfolded in less than 10 minutes. He accomplished the amazing feat during a competition in Mumbai.
