Mischief was clearly afoot in Himachal Pradesh as Khalistan flags were found tied to the main gate and the boundary wall of the state’s Legislative Assembly complex in Dharamshala on Sunday. The state will go to polls later this year.

"We received information this morning at around 7.30am. We have removed the flags and walls have been painted again. We are inquiring about the matter and are going to register a case under relevant sections of Himachal Pradesh Open Places Prevention of Disfigurement Act, 1985. Rest details can be shared after investigation".

Local MLA Vishal Nehria said termed the incident disgusting and an act of cowardice carried out in the darkness of night. It is unfortunate that the flag of Khalistan at the entrance of the Dharamsala assembly and slogans are written on the walls, while the non-working of CCTV and the absence of security personnel raises question marks on the administration and security agencies.

A shocked Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur condemned the incident, cowardly. Since the winter session of the Assembly alone is held there, tight security cover is required during that time alone he tweeted.

Last year the police found pro-Khalistan graffiti on boulders and parapets on the roads connecting Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi. In July last year, the Sikhs for Justice (SJF) a US-based secessionist outfit, had threatened the Himachal Chief Minister saying he will not be allowed to hoist the Tricolor on Independence Day.
