Hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned; at least three top leaders have publicly expressed interest in succeeding him, according to reports. Britain's BBC reports that Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, Attorney General Suella Braverman and pro-Brexit MP Steve Baker are interested in the post. Johnson said in his resignation speech that he would remain in office until replaced.
Johnson remained in power despite the resignation of his top line of ministers. On Wednesday, speaking in Parliament, the embattled prime minister said he would continue to do his duty and resign if he found it impossible for his government to move forward. He rejected calls to resign, arguing that he had a mandate from voters to remain in office.
Months of discontent over Johnson's judgment and ethics in the ruling Conservative Party erupted with the resignations of Treasury Chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid within minutes of each other on Tuesday evening. At least 32 British lawmakers, including Sunak, quit Boris Johnson's government within 24 hours, saying the British leader no longer had their confidence and plunging his government into crisis.
