As more protests are expected in Hyderabad following the release of legislator Raja Singh, who was arrested for making comments against the Prophet Mohammad, the police detained several youths suspected of participating in the protests on Wednesday night, August 24.
The footage showed police lathi charge a number of youths, with some of their family members denying involvement in the protests. There have been numerous allegations of police personnel using excessive force and, in some cases, entering people's homes to detain protesters suspected of violence.
After Raja Singh was released on bail on Tuesday night, small-scale protests broke out on Wednesday, particularly in Shah Ali Banda.
AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) chief, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that AIMIM leaders were working till Wednesday to make the situation worse.
Around 90 protesters, who were picked up from around Shah Ali Banda and Asha Talkies and taken to Kanchanbagh police station, were released at 1.30 am after speaking to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone), Owaisi said.
He alleged that in one case the police used brutal force to break into the house and detained them. “This is unacceptable. They were released on my behalf. I have asked our cooperators to send the youth home," Owaisi said in a tweet.
Owaisi reiterated the demands for the re-arrest of Raja Singh and said, “This situation is a direct result of Raja Singh's hate speech. He should be sent to jail as soon as possible. I also reiterate my appeal to maintain law and order. #Hyderabad is our home, it should not be communalized.
