The central government recruitment agencies will have to massively enhance their capacity by multiple times over the next 18 months to bring on board 10 lakh people, which mean hiring nearly 1,850 people on a daily basis.
Narendra Modi Prime Minister of India ordered on Tuesday after reviewing the status of human resources in government establishments, in an announcement that is clearly aimed at boosting employment at a time when high inflation is threatening a fledgling economic recovery.
Taking to Twitter, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “The basis of New India is its youth power, to empower them Shri Modi is working continuously. Shri Modi’s directive to make 10 lakh recruitment in mission mode in all government departments and ministries in 1.5 years will bring new hope and confidence among the youth.”
The recruitment drive will provide jobs to people at a time when global economies, including India’s, are facing headwinds due to high inflation triggered by soaring crude oil prices and squeezed supply chains due to the war in Ukraine.
The scale of the new exercise can be understood from a reply to Parliament by the government earlier saying these agencies together had recruited about 5.6 lakh persons in central government jobs over a period of six years between 2014 and 2020. The total vacancies in central government had swell to over 8.7 lakh in 2020.
According to the 2020-21 periodic labor force survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate in India was 4.2%. Private analysts Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy put the latest unemployment rate estimates at 7.12% as on May, 2022.
