Growing up pangs?
1. I have completed my graduation in English Literature, Journalism and Communication triple main, I got admission for mass Communication at Pondicherry Central University and Madras Christian College, which I did not join because of some problems. My parents are interested in sending me abroad, but I am interested in cinematography and film direction. What should I do regarding my higher studies?
--N. Madhu, Hyderabad
The decision to go abroad or not must be yours. If you get a course of your choice in a university abroad, you may as well take it. That way all of you would be happy. Otherwise, for the courses that you mentioned, there are many of them in India. FTII in Pune is the best among them.
2. I have completed Plus-Two. I wish to go for a degree in Information Technology, but I do not like programming. Should I rethink about my decision and look for a new option?
--M. Visa Lakshmi, Guntur
If you do not like programming, you may not get the best out of a career in IT. There are, however, some affiliated careers in It like IT Consulting (post-MBA), Creative Arts in IT, which may interest you. However, all of them would expect their desired levels of programming. If programming is a strict no-no for you, you should look for an alternative career.
3. My son has completed graduation in History and wishes to pursue his higher studies in Archaeology. Could you tell me about the best courses related to Archaeology in India and its scope?
Garikapati Mohana Chandra, Rajahmundry
There are many universities which offer post-graduate Archaeology courses. All the prominent universities do that. BHU (Varanasi), University of Calcutta, Kerala University (Thiruvananthapuram), Mysore University, University of Madras, and Osmania University are some of the prominent ones. Delhi Institute of Heritage research and Management, affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, and St Xavier’s College, which is an autonomous college in Mumbai, also offer MA courses in Archaeology.
4. My closest friend has started spreading lies so vicious that she’s alienated her job. She’s maligned me so many times I’ve lost count. I’m scared to tell her to take a walk, God knows what she’ll say about me. She needs help, what can I do?
T. Sushmitha, Hyderabad
Chronic liars are usually very unhappy people, dissatisfied with their career, lover, life. Made-up tales can be constructive if turned into novels, poems, screenplays, but dangerous if used to slander others. If you’re genuinely concerned about this woman’s well-being, approach her as you would someone hooked on drugs. Provide her with the name of a good therapist, and be prepared to offer support in the unfortunate event that she relapses. Your only other option is to inform her you can no longer tolerate her mean-spirited lies and say goodbye to her.
