Launching a frontal attack on the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asserted that it won’t get single-party majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, as people will “vote for rejection of the saffron camp”.
Banerjee, speaking at the TMC’s Martyrs’ Day rally here, said that the BJP will be “swept away from power” at the Centre, an assertion snubbed by the saffron camp, stating that it was the Mamata Banerjee-led party which would “disintegrate” owing to infighting.
“I can certainly state that the BJP will not get single-party majority, and once that happens, others will unite to form the next government. In 2024, general election will be held to vote for rejection of the BJP.” “Break BJP’s prison, break its shackles; we have to bring in a people’s government in 2024,” the feisty TMC boss said amid thunderous applause.
“They have imposed GST on hospital beds. I want to ask how much GST the BJP will charge for funeral carts?” she said.
Listing her government’s achievements, she said that the Silicon Valley in Bengal, on city outskirts, would create 50,000 IT jobs.
“With the Tajpur Port coming up, Rs 12,000 crore will be further invested. There is a dedicated freight corridor coming up at Dankuni, which will connect Amritsar with Bengal,” she said.
The TMC chief Deucha Pachami maintained that the 3400-acre coal mining project would generate employment for over one lakh people, including tribal’s.
“Mark my words, the TMC will disintegrate on its own very soon. Presently the party is being run by a small coterie from south Kolkata. Unlike the BJP, the TMC is a faction-ridden party.” Irked over the CM’s remarks, CPI (M) leader Bhattacharya, who is also a senior advocate, said that an investigation committee should be formed to look into issues raised by the CM.
He explained that there were discrepancies in the registration numbers given while issuing birth certificates, during his tenure as Kolkata mayor, but that was later corrected.
“Let Mamata Banerjee head the committee and the report be made public after a fortnight. I will not plead my case there and will treat her to rosogollas (a popular Bengali sweetmeat) after the report is out,” he quipped. PTI
