Governor calls for empowerment of women

Governor Bishwa Bhushan Harichandan on Wednesday stressed the need for empowerment of women agricultural workers for the growth of Indian agriculture as they constitute 45.3% of the agricultural labor force.

Addressing the 52nd and 53rd graduation ceremonies of Angra here on Wednesday at the Mahathir Auditorium, the Governor said that women's empowerment and the agricultural crisis are two key issues facing the sector.

There are many benefits to empowering women. According to UN Women, a section of the United Nations promotes the economic empowerment of rural women, farmers, entrepreneurs and leaders to eradicate poverty and improve food security and gender equality.

He hailed the efforts made by stakeholders in agriculture sector to increase its share in National Gross Domestic Product which from 17.8 per cent in 2019-20 to 19.9 per cent in 2020-21. The Governor stressed the need for carrying out more research programmes to improve yields of various crops and agriculture a more profitable activity.

Noting the urgent need to overcome the agricultural crisis in India, he cited obstacles such as crop failure due to insufficient income generation (especially in small and medium farms), adverse trade regulations, rural indebtedness and inefficient value chain. Large scale agricultural community.

The Governor pointed out that an effective solution to the agricultural crisis could be provided by accelerating the procurement of major crops, strengthening forward markets, consolidating agricultural markets and diversifying agricultural products and promoting smart farming.
