Gold aplenty at CWG

India was showered with medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham on Sunday, with the country climbing to fourth position in the medals table.

Boxing world champion Nikhat Zareen clinched the light flyweight (50 kg) title while Neetu Ganghas won the women's 48 kg event. Amit Panghal (Men's 51kg) added third gold of the day for Indian boxers.

Season pairing Sarath Kamal and G Sathyan had to settle for table tennis men's doubles silver for the second edition in a row, losing to the English duo by 11-8, 8-11, 3-11, 11-7, 4-11. Paul Drink hall and Liam Pitch ford.

Skipper Savita Punia led the Indian women's hockey team with a stunning performance as they defeated New Zealand 2-1 in a shootout - the team's first medal at the Games in 16 years.

India won gold and silver in the men's triple jump through Eldos Paul and Abdullah Abbubkar, while Sandeep Kumar won bronze in the men's 10,000m race-walk event with a personal best performance.

Annu Rani also created history, becoming the first Indian javelin thrower to win a medal at the CWG.

At the time of going to print, India reached 49 medals with 17 gold, 13 silver and 19 bronze, trailing Australia, England and Canada.
