Extracurricular are anything you do outside of academics. These can include sports, music, community service activities, jobs/internships, clubs, and more

Initially filling a college admission for many seemed an effortless task. All that an applicant required to do was to submit facts about his/her background, education and achievements.

However, one column which stumps many is extracurricular activities.

Scores of students are applying to prestigious universities abroad. They not only need to submit a statement of purpose (SOP), academic achievements, but also high-light extra-curricular activities, which in turn play an equally important role in their selection. Certain varsities offer scholarships to those who excel in fields such as sports, arts.

The key to making your co-curricular activities stand out within the limited space of the application form is to focus on leadership qualities. Do not be afraid to brag a little. You need to emphasise the contributions and responsibilities undertaken.

Also, universities prefer students who are not only members of organizations, but also those who have been pro-active all though.

According to a recent study, students involved in extra-curricular activities are more likely to become leaders and good team players, while being outspoken.

Most students are good at multi-tasking in an informal way, but find it daunting when they are actually on the job. It goes without saying that college life is full of stimulating and fascinating experiences. Out-of-class activities surely spur growth and personal development. They not only serve as resume boosters for future jobs, but also increase one’s confidence to face the world.

College is definitely the right place to hone skills in myriad activities, such as sports, music, dramatics and debates. Being a dynamic member of an NGO or a theatre group only adds to credentials. Whatever one chooses, it should be something he or she is passionate about in order to excel.

Learning to stick to an activity is equally important. Being committed to an organization, even if it is not valuable lessons to learn.

Why Are Extracurricular Important?

Having extracurriculars on your resume, no matter where you apply to, helps you present a robust application that helps the admissions officers gain an overall deeper understanding of the type of person you are. This can make or break their decision to accept you into their university. A well-rounded profile demonstrates that you are passionate and dedicated to the things you care about, both of which are qualities that would make you a valuable addition to their student body.

A perfect blend of extra-curricular activities, academics and social life should be considered by all students alike.
