Big relief as Vizag medico tests negative for monkey pox

By Our Special Correspondent

The district officials were relieved when the 23-year-old medico from Visakhapatnam tested negative for symptoms of monkey pox. He is a final year student and has been receiving treatment at a private medical college teaching hospital in the city since he fell ill.

After he started showing symptoms of a viral zoonosis infection, he was isolated as a precautionary measure. The Rapid Response Team of Andhra Medical College took his samples for testing on August 6.

District Medical and Health Officer Dr. Vijayalakshmi told that the rashes on his body are turning black and not because the monkeys' rashes are red.

The DMHO said the medico will be discharged after the test results from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune came back negative on Monday evening. She said another disease with similar symptoms to the monkey disease had been contracted.

So far, not a single positive case of monkey disease has been registered in the state. As far as the suspected cases are concerned, one from Vizag, a two-year-old girl from Vijayawada and an 8-year-old boy from Guntur tested negative for suspected monkey pox. Currently, monkey pox positive cases in India.

The country's first case of monkey pox was reported on July 14 after a Keralite returning from the UAE tested positive for it. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkey pox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted from animals to humans.) with symptoms similar to those of smallpox patients in the past, although it is clinically less severe.
