TDP on Monday decided to support NDA's presidential candidate Darupadi Murmu. TDP National President and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu have announced the decision to support Darupadi Murmu, who has fielded the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance as their candidate in the July 18 elections.
This decision was taken in the party strategy committee meeting held on Monday. The TDP leader said that the party decided to support Darupadi Murmu, the first tribal woman to contest for the highest post.
Naidu said that TDP is always ahead for social justice. He reminded that TDP supported KR Narayanan and APJ Abdul Kalam for the post of President in the past.
Similarly, the party has nominated GMC Balayogi as Lok Sabha Speaker and Pratibha Bharati as Assembly Speaker. He reminded that after PV Narasimha Rao became the Prime Minister, TDP also grew beyond politics in the Nandyala by-elections.
The TDP's decision to support Murmu is significant as the party broke with the BJP ahead of the 2019 elections.
TDP has four MPs (three in Lok Sabha and one in Rajya Sabha) and 19 MLAs. The party won 23 seats in the 175-member Andhra Assembly in the 2019 elections, but four MLAs later defected to the ruling YSRCP.
Murmu is contesting against the joint opposition candidate, former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha.
As a result, both the ruling party and the main opposition in the state declared their support for the NDA candidate. YSRCP has already announced its support to Draupadi Murmu. The party hailed the nomination of the first tribal and a woman for the post of President of India.
YSRCP Parliamentary Party leader V Vijaya Sai Reddy and its floor leader in Lok Sabha P V Midhun Reddy were also present during Murmu's nomination filing on June 24. The Presidential Election of India will be held on July 18 and the results will be out. Announced on July 21.
