Despite the smart city in Kakinada, some areas are in darkness as the streetlights do not work properly in the evenings. The people of the area are deeply concerned as it has become difficult to walk on the streets and has become a boon for thieves. Central lighting system is yet to be completed in some parts of Kakinada city. People are afraid to go in the dark as they are attacked by stray dogs and pigs.
KMC officials have received complaints from citizens about streetlights in Mallya Agraharam, Dwarakanagar, Gandhinagar, Jaganncikpr and other areas.
Many people attribute poor lighting to LED lights and unfortunately even LEDs do not work properly. KMC has completely neglected unlit slum areas. At the intersection, the lighting is inadequate and accidents happen very often. KMC officials have been negligent in getting proper lighting provided by the people.
There is an SC hostel in Mallya Agraharam where only one light is emitted and additional pillars to the area require light. Students demanded that central lighting be installed at crossroads junctions.
People in some areas are voicing that crime is on the rise due to the darkness. They complained that 10 per cent of the streetlights were not working properly and that the KMC was acting indifferently despite paying heavy taxes to KMC BJP senior leader Chitnidi Srinivas. He said he had brought the matter to the notice of KMC officials, who had not yet set up the system. He questioned why these issues were not being addressed even though KMC had funds of crores of rupees.
P Satya Kumari said 90 per cent of the streetlights are working efficiently. "We are giving priority to setting up a streetlight system and solving many problems related to streetlights," she said. Satya Kumar said there was not enough lighting equipment in stock and would provide it when the stock arrived.
