Rare surgery performed on infant to remove strange tumor

Pediatric surgeons at Vijayawada Ankura Hospitals saved a child by performing a rare surgery to remove a tumor.

Speaking to the media on the hospital premises here on Wednesday, Ankura Hospital Medical Director Dr TV Vijay Kumar said the 18-month-old baby had developed a tumor on the left side of her neck, which threatened to weaken her left arm.

During a biopsy, doctors discovered a hybrid neurofibroma tumor, which is rare in children. Consultant Pediatric Surgeon Dr Varun Kumar said removing the tumor was a challenging task as it was very close to the nerves and could damage them.

After 8 hours of surgery, a 3 cm tumor was removed this was found to be non-malignant. Currently, the two-and-a-half-year-old girl has been kept under close observation by doctors. He said she has overcome post-surgery complications and is recovering well.

Plastic surgeon Dr Tarun Kant removed the tumor and the girl underwent physiotherapy and slowly she was able to raise her left arm.

The girl's father P Venkateswara Rao said that his child is safe now and thanked the team of doctors who saved her. Consultant Pediatric Intensivist Dr. Ravi Kumar participated in the press conference.
