Modi lauds woman power as Gujarat sees rise in female votes

By Our Special Correspondent

Women voters are at the forefront of the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, with PM Narendra Modi talking about women empowerment and announcing schemes worth crores for them during his two-day visit. However, critics point to tedious data for the safety of women in the state to raise questions about the BJP government’s achievements.

The number of women voters in Gujarat has increased to 2.14 crore, which is an increase of 3.45 per cent over the number of women voters in the 2017 Assembly elections. The number of male voters increased by 3.05 per cent from 2.25 crore in 2017 to 2.32 crore. Modi, who unveiled the traditional flag on the Mahakali Temple in Panchmahal, a symbol of women's empowerment, targeting women voters, addressed the mothers, sisters and daughters.

However, the state has registered 3,857 rapes and gang-rape cases in the last two years. According to data submitted by the BJP government during the last assembly budget session, averages of five women are raped every day.

In the two years ending December 2021, 61 gang-rape cases were reported, Congress legislators and Home Affairs Minister Harsh Sanghvi said in response to questions. Criticizing the BJP government, Gujarat Congress Deputy Leader Shailesh Parmar said, "Despite being called a safe Gujarat, the government is carrying out various programs like 'Suraksha Setu', but there are five rapes a day in the state."
