The Myanmar junta's move to execute four political prisoners has drawn strong opposition from the international community. However, India is concerned about the situation in Myanmar.
“We have observed the news with deep concern. As a friend of the people of Myanmar we will continue to support the return of democracy and we want to uphold the rule of law and the democratic process," the foreign ministry said.
Among the people executed were democracy activist Kyaw Min Yew and former lawmaker and hip-hop artist Phyo Zea Tha (who was a lawmaker from Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy).
Myanmar is strategically under strong Chinese influence as it has invested heavily in infrastructure projects. Moreover, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Myanmar earlier this month.
Also, Myanmar is geographically important to India as it shares a border with the northeastern states. India is in the process of establishing relations with the Myanmar junta. Experts believe that criticizing the junta will bring Myanmar closer to China. According to experts, the role of Myanmar's military is crucial in any democratic transition.
