Guntur Mayor Kavati Manohar Naidu stated that a complete ban on single-use plastic will be imposed in the city starting July 1, announced during a press meet held at GMC Council Hall in the city on Tuesday.
He said that an awareness campaign would be organised on June 7, Manohar Naidu explained that various programmes will be conducted for 25 days to educate people on the adverse effects of using plastic. Public representatives, NGOs, GMC officials, staff, ward volunteers will also be part of the campaign, he added.
The Mayor said that use of plastic is leading to health problems and spoiling the groundwater. He urged people to reduce plastic usage. GMC Commissioner Keerthi Chekuri said that ban of plastic means saving people from cancer and other diseases.
She sought cooperation of the people for the development of the greenery and added that they will take steps to develop greenery on the central dividers. She said, they have prepared plans for the development of the traffic islands in Guntur city.
She made it clear that they will ban use of plastic less than one hundred microns flexis and encourage use of cloth and jute banners. GMC chief medical officer Dr Vijaya Lakshmi was also present.
