Beijing announced on Friday that it was suspending cooperation with the United States in several areas, including dialogue with senior-level military commanders, in retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan this week.
China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was suspending climate talks with the US, as well as cooperation on cross-border crime prevention and repatriation of illegal immigrants, among eight specific measures.
Zero Tolerance for Separatist Activities in Taiwan, vows China
China vowed on Wednesday that it would not tolerate separatist activities in Taiwan and reiterated that it would take the autonomous island by force if necessary.
The warning from Beijing, which considers Taiwan a terrorist state, comes after unprecedented Chinese military exercises surrounding Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island.
China's Taiwan Affairs Office released a white paper on Wednesday detailing how it plans to claim the island through a range of economic incentives and military pressure. "We are ready to create ample space for peaceful reunification but will not allow any form of separatist activities," the paper said. China will not renounce the use of force and we have the option of taking all measures.
