Agnipath agitation derails Bihar House proceedings

By Our Special Correspondent

The Agneepath Recruitment Scheme for the Armed Forces has emerged as the latest rally point for opposition parties in Bihar. State Assembly proceedings were adjourned on Monday after the joint opposition forcibly adjourned the House three times.

The opposition parties including the RJD, CPI, CPM, CPI (ML) led by leader of Opposition and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav walked out fromthe Assembly on Tuesday.

Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha rejected the demand that the issue could not be allowed to be debated as it was not relevant to the Assembly. Opposition members, however, chanted slogans demanding the withdrawal of the Agnipath scheme.

The Speaker adjourned the House before the lunch break. Even during the lunch session, members of the opposition remained adamant on their demand and created chaos, forcing Sinha to adjourn the House twice. Even outside the House, RJD and CPI (ML) MLAs held placards and chanted slogans.

There was also a commotion in the Legislature. Opposition groups called for a halt to the protests, saying they would allow the debate on the Agneepath scheme to continue. Council member and former chief minister Rabri Devi told reporters, "We know the Center will not back down from the scheme. Why mislead people on this? We will fight against the Agneepath scheme inside and outside the House.

We demanded at least five minutes to discuss this topic. The speaker refused to give us time and said that the matter was central. The Speaker is an independent body that does not belong to any party. He represents each party in the House.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Kanhayya Kumar dazzled in his party's 'Satyagraha' program against the Defense Recruitment Scheme in the Chowk Shikarpur area of Patna. While Kanhaiya was speaking against the short-term recruitment scheme, a young man stood up and chanted slogans against him. After Kanhaiya's speech, Congress workers and pro-Agneepath youths got into an altercation. Kanhaiya then left the stage with security.

BJP leaders at the Center described the scheme as a good move. If they like it why not enforce it on government officials and hire them under a four-year contract.
